Eine Nostalgie, das Heimweh nach dem Garten Eden" (O.Welles; aus Bogdanovich, S.180) Das Werk von Welles in seiner Ganzheit erfassen zu wollen, gleicht dem Versuch des Journalisten in "Citizen Kane", das Rtsel eines vollen Lebens eindeutig beschreiben zu wollen, man mu daran scheitern. Der Mythos Orson Welles, wie der Mythos der vielen Figuren, die er inszenierte und spielte, entzieht sich der normalen Kategorisierung und Schablonen, die man so gerne auf das Schaffen eines groen Menschen anwendet. Mittlerweile ist O. Welles als eines der grten Genies und Innovatoren des letzten Jahrhunderts auf dem Gebiet des Filmes, des Radios und des Theaters angesehen. Zu Lebzeiten eckte er aber an und konnte nicht alle Hindernisse, die sich seinem enormen Schaffensdrang entgegenstellten, berwinden. Unverstanden in Amerika, bewundert in Europa, schaffte er es nie wirklich, das zu machen, was er eigentlich nur wollte und wofr er Zeit seines Lebens kmpfte: seine Ideen so umzusetzen, wie er sie erdacht hatte. Von den 200 Filmprojekten und Drehbchern, die er in seinem Leben schrieb und vorbereitete, konnte er nur 12 umsetzen, oft unter groen finanziellen und produktionstechnischen Schwierigkeiten. Die Tragik, die er in so viele seiner geliebten Figuren schrieb, hat eine einfache Wurzel: ihn selber. Die folgende Arbeit beschftigt sich mit dem Mythos, dem Genie und den Widersprchen des Schaffens und Seins von Orson Welles.
