Entstanden sind die Texte zwischen dem 13. Jahrhundert bis vor 1517. Da weltliche mittelalterliche Texte vor allem mndlich tradiert wurden, ist eine genaue Zuordnung eines Autors nicht nur fragwrdig, sondern, wie auch eine Textgenese im Allgemeinen, nahezu unmglich. Rezipiert wurde von Analphabeten, bzw. von einem Vorleser, der oftmals selbst nderungen an der ursprnglichen Gestalt des Textes vornahm. Basis fr den Ortnit AW' bilden verschiedene Sagenmotive, so eine frnkische Sage, die den Zwergenknig Alberich1, der hergeleitet vom Wort Alb fr Elfe, allgemein fr Zwerg' stand und dadurch in ungemein vielen Werken des Mittelalters zugegen ist, beinhaltete und eine russische Heldendichtung, die sich um Ilias Murometz, der vermutlich fr Ilias von Rieuthen, welcher am Gardasee Ortnit dient, steht. Desweiteren existiert eine Dietrichsage von Nordlndern, der Hertnit, in dem das Drachenkampfmotiv auftaucht. In dieser Sage ist Hertnit Brautwerbungshelfer eines Knigs und gleichzeitig selbst Knig von Russland. Allerdings gibt es auch Spekulationen, dass der Ortnit sich rein aus der Wolfdietrichsage herausentwickelt habe. Zentrale Schaupltze der Geschichte stellen Suders, als Hauptstadt der boshaften Heiden, also symbolisch fr das Chaos, und Lamparten, also die Lombardei, als geordnete christliche Welt und Herrschaftssitz Ortnits dar.
