Der 1813 im westlichen Thringen geborene Otto Ludwig strebte ursprnglich die kompositorische Musikerlaufbahn an, wurde sich aber schnell seiner Zuneigung und Fhigkeit zu dichterischen Schpfungen bewusst. Kontinuierlich entwickelte er seine Kunst realistischer Darstellungen, die dann schlielich in der novellistischen Meistertriade Die Heiteretei, Aus dem Regen in die Traufe, Zwischen Himmel und Erde (1854/55) gipfelte. Aber auch auf dramatischem Gebiet gelangte Otto Ludwig nach interessanten Zwischenstufen etwa der einmaligen Gestalt des Goldschmiedes Cardillac im Frulein von Scuderi zu der so spannenden wie stimmungsgewaltigen Tragdie Der Erbfrster, deren Urauffhrung im Dresdner Hoftheater (1850) ungeachtet Hebbels und Anzengrubers Schaffen einem bhnengeschichtlichen Meilenstein zwischen Kleist und Ibsen gleichkommt. Eine hier vorgeschlagene Neufassung der Schlussszene mit eher heiterem Ausgang kann das Drama schnell dem dauerwertigen Theaterrepertoire zurckgewinnen. In den letzten Lebensjahren oblag Otto Ludwig seinen Dramatischen Studien, in denen er alsbald hochgelobt die konzeptionelle Divergenz zwischen Shakespeare und Schiller meisterhaft herausarbeitete.
