Seine Idee, dort Bilder einzusetzen, wo Worte nicht mehr funktionieren, hat mich fasziniert. Neurath hat die Ebene des Visuellen systematisch an die Oberflche geholt und mit seiner Wiener Methode der Bildstatistik", spter International System of Typographic Picture Education" kurz ISOTYPE , einer visuellen Lingua franca fr universellen Einsatz, den Grundstein fr internationale Bildzeichen und Piktogramme gelegt. Die Tatsache, dass wir heute in einem fremden Land, dessen Sprache wir nicht mchtig sind, trotzdem die UBahn, den Feuerlscher, den Notausgang oder das Krankenhaus finden knnen, ist Otto Neurath zu verdanken. Die Schaffung von ISOYPE kann allerdings nicht ohne die Person Otto Neuraths und die zeitlichen Umstnde, in denen er lebte, verstanden werden. Meine Arbeit beginnt daher mit einer Biographie Neuraths. Dieser sah ISOTYPE als Teil einer umfassenden Wissenschaftstheorie, die im darauf folgenden Abschnitt dargelegt wird. Im Anschluss folgen Kapitel ber die Entwicklung und internationale Verbreitung von ISOTYPE. Es stellt sich allerdings die Frage, ob eine Zeichensprache tatschlich universell gltig ist oder ob auch sie bestimmten Einschrnkungen unterliegt. Mit dieser Problematik habe ich mich im letzten Abschnitt der vorliegenden Arbeit auseinandergesetzt. Neuraths Leben und Werk knnen auf wenigen Seiten nur sehr kursorisch dargestellt werden, ich hoffe, dass es mir gelungen ist, einen berblick ber Otto Neurath und sein bis heute gltiges Wirken zu geben.
