She is the founding author of Our Environment: A Canadian Perspective. She is recognized for her research in sustainable tourism, ecotourism and tourism growth management, as well as planning and policy in water resources and coastal zone management. Her current research focuses on governance and quality of life issues in tourism and other communities as they are working toward sustainability, and on managing growth and its impacts on communities, including wildlife, water resources, and parks and protected areas.Dr. Maureen Reed is currently Professor at the University of Saskatchewan and is an adjunct professor at the Institute for Resources and Environmental Studies at the University of British Columbia. She also serves as chair of the Graduate Affairs Committee in the Geography Department at the University of Saskatchewan. Her research specializations are communitybased ecosystem management, environmental policy making, rural community sustainability, and feminist geography. In addition to dozens of journal articles and book chapters, Dr. Reed has written two books, Our Environment: A Canadian Perspective 3rd Edition (2004, with Dianne Draper) and Taking Stands: Gender and the Sustainability of Rural Communities (2005). The book, Taking Stands, was awarded the K.D. Srvastava Prize for academic excellence. She is particularly concerned to explain social and equity dimension of environmental and land use policies as they affect rural places; hence, her research is focused on how participatory decisionmaking approaches, working conditions, gender relations, and sociocultural change affect the capacity of rural communities to work towards sustainability. She currently works on several research projects related to ecosystem management in forestry and agricultural communities, biosphere reserves, and national parks.
