To show she can be on time, Mrs. Burdle invites her friend to lunch at 12 o'clock sharp. While her carefully timed preparations proceed smoothly, Mr. Howgego finds himself caught up in a series of wild mishaps and arrives for lunch four hours late. Lamont's watercolor illustrations of two anthropomorphized dogs in oldfashioned clothes have an expressive yet gentle humor. They are nicely placed on the page with a variety of single scenes and actionseries panels. For example, Mrs. Burdle does a selfsatisfied little jig at having everthing ready on schedule while across the bottom of the page a harried Mr. Howgego drives his car into a swollen stream and just manages to save himself by grabbing onto a floating branch.
