Painting Indiana represents the best work of a new group of Hoosier artists. It was commissioned by the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association to document the state's beauty at the threshold of the new millennium. Each artist was assigned a group of counties; all 92 counties are included in the book. These contemporary painters are moved by the same spirit as the renowned Hoosier Group, which included artists like T. C. Steele and J. Ottis Adams, who painted Indiana at the close of the 19th and early part of the 20th centuries. Each artist comments briefly on his work, and Earl L. Conn provides short histories of each county, filled with fascinating anecdotes and littleknown facts as well as the standard version of county history.
