En la ltima dcada se ha incrementado la construccin de viviendas de baja altura utilizando muros de concreto. Considerando la rigidez y resistencia de estructuras con muros de concreto, las demandas de fuerzas y desplazamientos son relativamente bajas y, por tanto, se utilizan muros con baja resistencia de concreto, espesor reducido, cuantas menores que las mnimas y refuerzo a cortante en el alma formado por mallas de alambre soldado. Sin embargo, esta prctica carece de un sustento tcnico robusto y conduce a un incremento no justificado del costo de la vivienda. Adems, debido a las caractersticas particulares de los muros, los parmetros de diseo y los requisitos en los reglamentos vigentes, no son directamente aplicables. En este libro se proponen recomendaciones para anlisis, diseo y construccin de muros para vivienda de baja altura. Teniendo en cuenta el enfoque prctico de las recomendaciones propuestas, se considera que stas son una herramienta robusta para que los diseadores y desarrolladores de reglamentos evalen la efectividad de los procedimientos de diseo disponibles y promuevan una vivienda segura y econmica ante solicitaciones ssmicas.
