Was Parteien nach Ansicht der Parteienforschung sind und wie sie als demokratische Gebilde funktionieren, davon handelt die vorliegende Untersuchung. Gilt dabei gemeinhin das, was Parteienforscher als demokratische Partei bezeichnen, als getreues Abbild jener RealWit, wie sie in westlichen Parteiendemokratien vorgefun den wird, so ist bei niiherer Betrachtung erstaunlich, wie wenig die Parteienforschung einvernehmlich tiber die tatsachlichen Funktionen, Strukturen und Handlungsweisen von Parteien auszusagen wei. Die Ursache hierflir hat mit dem Zustand dieses Wissenschaftszweiges zu tun. Denn was er an empirischen und theoretischen Ertriigen erbringt, gehorcht vielfach eher den erkenntnisleitenden Mastiiben und Imperativen paradigmatischen Denkens dreier Forschungstraditionen als der vorgefundenen Realitiit. Vor diesem Hintergrund untersucht die vorliegende Arbeit in einem ersten Teil die bislang noch nicht hinreichend offengelegte Kontroverse urn die Frage, von welchem alternativen demokratietheoretischen Bezugsrahmen aus und unter Zugrundelegung welcher strittigen Priimissen und Problemansichten Parteienforschung betrieben wer den soli. In einem zweiten Teil bilanziert sie anhand typischer Aussagen der Parteien literatur tiber begriffliche, funktionale, typologische und strukturelle Eigenschaften von Parteien in der Demokratie, welcher problematische Diskussionsstand und welches theoretische Leistungsdefizit flir die Parteienforschung charakteristisch ist. Die Unter suchung gelangt zu dem Ergebnis, da sich dieser Wissenschaftszweig zumeist gegen i.iber seinem ureigensten Erkenntnisgegenstand als i.iberfordert erweist, weil sich seine Vertreter infolge paradigmatischer Sichtverengung und verfestigter Kommunikations barrieren den Weg zu generellen Aussagen und zu anspruchsvollerer Theoriebildung selbst versperren.
