Die Anregung, ein Buch Uber passive Mikrowellenradiometrie zu schreiben, ergab sich aus dem steigenden Interesse zur Anwen dung dieser modernen Technik und dem Fehlen entsprechender deutscher Literatur. Das Buch ist vor allem fUr Studenten der Hochfrequenztechnik und der Physik nach dem Vordiplom gedacht. Der Inhalt setzt gewisse Grundkenntnisse der Hochfrequenz technik voraus. Im ersten Kapi tel wird auf die physikalischen Grundlagen der Enstehung und des Transports elektromagnetischer Rauschstrah lung eingegangen. Wegen der Bedeutung bei der Uberwiegenden Zahl der Anwendungen werden hier berei ts auch die Grundlagen der Ausbreitungsbedingungen in der Atmosphare behandelt. Da Fortschritte in der passiven Mikrowellenradiometrie immer eng mi t der Entwicklung der Mej3technik verbunden sind, folgen Kapitel Uber Mikrowellenradiometer und Spektrometer. Eine vollstandige Behandlung der Anwendungen wtirde den Rahmen dieses Buches sprengen. Wir haben uns daher auf zwei besonders wichtige Bereiche beschrankt, und zwar auf die Fernerkundung und die Plasmadiagnostik.
