Diabetes mellitus is the fourth cause of mortality in the world, after cardiovascular disease, cancer and muscularskeletal disease .Diabetes mellitus, is incurable and leads to death due to the longterm complications.This study was undertaken using qualitative approach ,to explore the patients? perceptions about selfmanagement of diabetes. The findings show that familybased strategies are more successful in the management of diabetes in Indonesia than are programs focusing on the diabetic person alone. In addition, most participants initially did not have adequate knowledge about selfmanagement. This situation influenced their capability to manage the disease. Hence, family involvement is important as a strategy for developing diabetes selfmanagement education. Therefore, this study clearly highlights family issues as a contributing factor in achieving better selfmanagement in the Indonesian context.
