This book draws together papers by five authors addressing the question of how the future course of development in the Philippines would be shaped by patterns of power and politics, as posed by a conference titled "Development in the Philippines: What's Next?" at Arizona State University in March 1992. Three common themes are elaborated: the country's developing pluralism, the weakness of the state, and the way distinctive attributes and dimensions of Philippine culture continue to shape national economic and political developments. The book strives to go beyond a dualistic treatment of the elite vs. masses, and focuses instead on how actual groups of Filipinos Muslims, Tribal Filipinos, political activists, etc. are faring.
