Paul Ricur's testament is an immense uvre, now justly acclaimed for confronting the principal intellectual challenges of the 20th century without breaking off the dialogue with the 'great book of philosophy'. By covering the diverse themes the philosopher treated, this book enlightens us on the thing that drives his thinking constantly in movement and provides its framework: a refection on man as an active being. The author presents a new configuration of the evolution of this philosophy of human action by observing it from three viewpoints, both distinct and complementary. Firstly, he retraces the genesis of a philosophical anthropology, at the meeting point of reflective thought, phenomenology and existentialism, which focuses on the foundations of human action. Secondly, the author seeks to resituate Paul Ricur's epistemology, nourished by hermeneutic tradition brought into contact with the human sciences. Thirdly, he identifies the milestones of a normative philosophy that opens morals, politics, justice and law onto a horizon of universality, without disclaiming the incarnation of human action in a 'living world' already structured by these values. As opposed to hagiographical rhetoric or systematic critiques, the author has taken just the 'right distance' from the work, which permits him to restore the deep unity of Ricoeur's thought while revealing its tensions and paradoxes. He is particularly attentive to the philosophical reception of Paul Ricur's thoughts on human action, which he presents as 'open work' raised to the 'conflict of interpretations'. All of which signifies that after the great thinker's death, his philosophy has only just begun to exist, reborn in the mind of each new reader.
