Cet ouvrage, qui forme le troisime volet d'un triptyque ddi aux diffrentes expressions que l'ide de phnomnologie hermneutique a reues dans la philosophie du XXe sicle, se donne pour tche d'analyser et d'valuer la contribution de Ricur ce courant. Il se focalise d'abord sur la perce hermneutique de 1960, qui a pour arrireplan une phnomnologie du volontaire de l'involontaire et une anthropologie de la faillibilit. La seconde partie, place sous l'gide du ' Cogito narratif ', retrace la gense d'une hermneutique de la conscience historique sous le fil conducteur d'une analyse des oprations de mise en intrigue narrative dans le rcit de fiction et le rcit historique. La troisime partie dgage les principaux phnomnes qui tayent l'ide d'une phnomnologie du ' sujet capable ' qui domine les derniers travaux de Ricur. Qu'il s'agisse de la capacit de se souvenir, d'oublier, de pardonner, de promettre ou de tmoigner, ces recherches donnent tout son relief la question kantienne : ' Que m'estil permis d'esprer ? '.
