In this comprehensive study of the art of drawing with a pen, artist and author Joseph Pennell highlights his opinionated technical suggestions with more than 400 illustrations by 250 famous artists, including Titian, Drer, Rembrandt, Rodin, Manet, Renoir, Beardsley, Pyle, Hiroshige, van Gogh, Rackham, and other masters from around the globe. Each of the highquality reproductions is accompanied by a critique of its style and execution and occasional comparisons to the artists other works and those of contemporaries.Featured images range from landscapes by Titian, Rembrandt, and Corot to figure studies by Drer, Goya, and Rodin and portraits by Manet and Matisse. The tremendous variety of subjects extends to street scenes by Toulouse Lautrec and van Gogh, episodes from literature envisioned by Rossetti, BurneJones, and Millais, and decorations by Crane and Morris. A visual treasure trove and valuable reference, this volume will serve as an enduring source of instruction and inspiration for artists of all skill levels.

I was excited to get this book, but I found the content a bit lacking. The descriptions of each artist were too brief, and I hoped for more detailed insight into their techniques. It’s decent, but not quite what I was looking for.

Great Reference, but Not Enough Depth
I appreciate the range of artists covered in this survey, but I felt some sections could have gone deeper into the techniques. It’s nice for a general overview of pen drawing history, but I was hoping for more detailed analysis.

Beautiful Art, but Packaging Was Off
The book itself is wonderful! The drawings are beautifully reproduced. But the packaging was pretty flimsy and the corners of my book arrived slightly dented, which was disappointing.

A Must-Have for Art Lovers
This book is an absolute treasure for anyone interested in pen drawing. The illustrations are stunning and the history provided really enriches the experience. I got it for my daughter, who’s an art student, and she can't put it down!
