Concerned with contemporary notions of personhood and the relationship between persons and places, this book, presents a detailed insight into the Vanua Lavans engagement with modernity, and examines how they relate to the past, make sense of the present and anticipate the future. Marilyn Stratherns claim that the Melanesian person is a dividual by and large holds for the Vanua Lavan person. But Vanua Lavans have also been exposed to, and creatively engaged with, what can be summarised under the term Western individualism. The author draws together several themes, discourses and conversations which concern Vanuatu specifically, the Pacific as a wider geographic area but also theoretical fields in anthropology: the relevance and expressions of sociality through kinship, concepts of person, issues about land and cosmology, the kastom debate, and questions about continuity and change. In doing so she provides a snapshot of contemporary notions of personhood.

I really enjoyed the perspectives shared in 'Ideas, Ideals and Practice of Sociality on Vanua Lava'. The author dives deep into cultural practices which made me appreciate the nuances of community life. Definitely a valuable addition to any cultural studies collection!

Great for Cultural Studies
This book is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in Vanuatu and its unique social dynamics. The way it discusses person-space memory is fascinating! Just wish it had a few more visuals to help with understanding the concepts.

An Insightful Read
I picked up this book, 'Ideas, Ideals and Practice of Sociality on Vanua Lava', for my anthropology course. The insights into community interactions have really enriched my understanding of social structures. It’s a bit academic, but worth the read!

Not What I Expected
I was hoping for a more practical guide based on the title, but it’s more theoretical. The discussions on sociality are deep but felt a bit dry at times. Wouldn’t recommend unless you're really into academic texts!
