Besonders deutlich wird diese Kombination von tradierten und experimentellen Elementen in den Texten, die sich im weitesten Sinne mit Geschichte bzw. der Darstellung historischer Ereignisse beschftigen. Ein Vertreter dieser Richtung ist der 1949 in London geborene Autor und Literaturkritiker Peter Ackroyd. Der Groteil seiner Werke zeichnet sich durch eine Gemeinsamkeit aus: Romane wie The Great Fire of London (1982), The Last Testament of Oscar Wilde (1983), Hawksmoor (1985), Chatterton (1987), First Light (1989), English Music (1992) und Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem (1994) spielen in vergangenen Epochen oder stellen einen intertextuellen Bezug dazu her. Die Bandbreite der dafr gewhlten literarischen Genres reicht von der fiktiven Autobiographie ber den Detektivroman, den Knstlerroman, den historischen Roman bis hin zur Gothic novel. Die konventionelle Gothic novel, fr die sich im deutschen Sprachgebrauch die Bezeichnung Schauerroman etabliert hat, wird im allgemeinen auf den Zeitraum von der zweiten Hlfte des 18. Jahrhunderts bis etwa 1820 datiert. Diese recht exakte zeitliche Festlegung lt vermuten, da es sich bei diesem Genre um eine literarische Strmung handelt, deren Entstehung und Ende von epochenspezifischen Bedingungen abhngig waren.
