Peter Krukenberg (17871865), Professor fr Pathologie und Therapie an der halleschen Universitt sowie Direktor der Medizinischen Klinik, gehrte um die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zu den fhrenden Klinikern Deutschlands. Seine Hauptwirkung entfaltete er in seiner 1816 gegrndeten ambulatorischen Klinik. In dieser wurden zahlreiche arme Kranke kostenlos versorgt. Dies konnte nur gewhrleistet werden, da die Patienten grsstenteils durch Krukenbergs Studenten besucht und ambulant behandelt wurden. Nutzen durch diese Art der medizinischen Betreuung hatten auch die Studierenden. Bisher vorwiegend theoretisch ausgebildet, hatten sie nun die Mglichkeit, praktisch an konkreten Fllen zu lernen. Krukenberg hat whrend seiner fast vierzigjhrigen Ttigkeit jeden Tag der Klinik gewidmet. Daher wurde von ihm der Ausspruch "Wozu braucht ein Doctor Amsement, seine Kranken sind sein Amsement" geprgt. Als Professor an der Medizinischen Fakultt hatte er zustzlich zur klinischen Ttigkeit Vorlesungen zu halten und das Dekanat zu leiten. Des Weiteren verffentlichte Krukenberg zwei Bnde der "Jahrbcher der ambulatorischen Klinik zu Halle".
