In den Vereinigten Staaten wurde 1992 der Demokrat Bill Clinton nach 12 Jahren republikanischer Prsidentschaft zum Prsidenten gewhlt. In Grobritannien errang New Labour mit Tony Blair nach 18 Jahren konservativer Regierung einen erdrutschartigen Sieg. In Deutschland beendete die SPD nach 16 Jahren Helmut KohlRegierung die Vorherrschaft von CDU/CSU. Mit Gerhard Schrder erreichte die SPD zum zweiten Mal seit Bestehen der Bundesrepublik mehr Stimmen als die Union. Alle drei Wahlsiege waren gewaltig und alle drei waren zumindest auch Folge gelungener professioneller und personalisierter Wahlkampagnen. Alle drei Spitzenkandidaten galten als mediengewandt und telegen, und prsentierten sich als Modernisierer. Ihre Kampagnen zielten vor allem auf die Akquisition der Wechselwhler. Die Parallelitt der Ereignisse sorgte fr hnliche Erklrungen des Wahlausgangs: die Whler wollten nicht nur einen Regierungs, sondern auch einen Politikwechsel. Jedes der drei Duelle (Clinton gegen Bush, Blair gegen Major, Schrder gegen Kohl) wird als Besttigung fr die in den letzten Jahren immer wieder postulierte 'Personalisierung der Politik' herangezogen (Brettschneider 2002, 13f; Klein/Ohr 2000, S. 199f). Unter Personalisierung von Politik werden zwei Dimensionen gefasst. Zum einen stehen immer strker die Kandidaten und immer weniger die Parteien im Mittelpunkt der Wahlkampagnen und im Mittelpunkt der Medienberichterstattung. Wahlkampf wird immer mehr auf Personen zugeschnitten: der Kandidat wird zur Hauptbotschaft der Partei. Diese Dimension der Personalisierung wird auch als allgemeine oder globale Personalisierung bezeichnet
