Diese Idee des Pariser Pdagogen und Historikers, der von 1863 bis 1937 gelebt hat, stand im engen Zusammenhang mit den archologischen Ausgrabungen der antiken olympischen Sportsttten der Jahre 1875 bis 1881, einer steigenden Mobilitt sowie einer weltweit aufstrebenden Sportbewegung gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts. Die antiken Olympischen Spiele, die sich ber eine Zeitspanne von knapp 1.200 Jahre erstreckten und im griechischen Olympia zwischen 776 vor Christus und 393 nach Christus stattfanden, sollten wiederbelebt werden, sodass Coubertin daher auch Athen als Austragungssttte fr die ersten neuzeitlichen Olympischen Spiele auserkoren hatte. Die Renaissance der Olympischen Idee erfuhr in den Folgejahren jedoch groe Widerstnde, die in groem Mae auch die Frage nach einer Beteiligung Deutschlands mit sich brachte. Protektionistische, nationalistische und chauvinistische Grnde spielten dabei eine wesentliche Rolle. Hinzu kamen finanzielle, strukturelle und inhaltliche Bedenken der OlympiaGegner.
