Everything you need to know about opera in one handy guide. Part of our bestselling Pocket Guide series, The Pocket Guide to Opera contains AZ synopses of operas and biographies of the characters, lyricists and composers. The book features the history of opera, setting it in the context of its day and discussing the influence of world events and influences such as the Freemasons and the composers patrons. With factboxes highlighting surprising, little known and often quirky operatic facts, this fascinating book is a mustbuy guide for everyone who loves opera.

I was excited to get the Pocket Guide to Opera, but when it arrived, it felt a bit cheap. The binding isn't great, and I noticed a few pages were slightly wrinkled. It's a good concept, but the execution could be much better. Disappointed, to say the least.

A Great Introductory Guide
I picked up the Pocket Guide to Opera as a gift for my friend who's just getting into opera. It has some really neat insights and summaries about major works. The layout is super handy for quick reference, making it easier to follow along during performances. Definitely worth it for newcomers!

Useful but Lacks Depth
So, the Pocket Guide to Opera is pretty useful for a casual overview, but I wish it had more detailed analyses of the operas. I felt like some of the descriptions were too brief. Still, it's a decent starting point, especially for someone who doesn't know much about opera yet.
