Protocols follow guidelines provided by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), the organization that sets sonography policies, practice standards, safety procedures, and performance guidelines. Detailed line drawings accompany most sonograms, clarifying the structures shown on the diagnostic image.
