En la poca en que Mallarm publicaba estos versos, estaba la Penltima, esa famosa Penltima, de la que se hablaba hace diez o doce aos de la Rive gauche a todas partes: la Penltima era entonces el nec plus ultra de lo incomprensible, el Chimborazo de lo infranqueable y el rompecabezas chino. As aluda el crtico francs Gustave Kahn, en Simbolistas y decadentes, a uno de los ms arduos poemas en prosa de Mallarm incluidos en este volumen; textos de una dificultad extrema que, hoy como ayer, siguen desafiando al lector con su bsqueda intransigente de las posibilidades ltimas del verbo potico. Como bien lo seala Violeta Percia en el penetrante Prlogo escrito especialmente para esta edicin, Mallarm juega en estos textos con las velocidades del sentido en las palabras y de la palabra en los sentidos, extrayendo de los repliegues ms insospechados de la sintaxis, y de las resonancias lxicas menos usuales, los rasgos singularsimos que la realidad disimula debajo de su apariencia banal. Escritos con largos intervalos de silencio, a partir de 1864 y hasta los aos inmediatamente anteriores a la muerte de su autor, los Poemas en prosa de Mallarm fueron finalmente reunidos en la primera parte de su libro Divagaciones, de 1897, bajo el ttulo Ancdotas o poemas. Hoy, Ediciones De La Mirndola los presenta en edicin bilinge, traducidos por primera vez al espaol.
