This collection of haunting, mystical poems of the night by the great Rainer Maria Rilke is the only English translation to bring them all togetherIn 1916, Rainer Maria Rilke presented his friend Rudolf Kassner with a notebook, containing 22 poems meticulously inscribed in his own hand and bearing the title Poems to Night. This evocative sequence of poems, which echoes some of the great themes of German romanticism, is now thought to represent one of the key stages in the creative breakthrough and spiritual evolution of the preeminent European poet of the twentieth century. This translation was the 1st to bring all the poems together in English and is enhanced by the translators valuable introduction and a rich selection of further poems Rilke dedicated to night at various stages of his life, providing fascinating insight into Rilkes development. The poems recall all of the great poets important themes: death and longing, the troubling reconciliation of beauty and suffering, and a search for transcendance. These deep questions circle the imagery of night in Rilkes intensely lyrical style: darkness, the stars and the moon wheel through the verses, and the play of light and dark beomes an evocation of lifes duality. No other poet was as singularly devoted to beauty or as capable of gifting its consolations to the readera volume to cherish on stormy nights and peaceful ones.

The poems in this collection are wonderful, but I found the print size a bit small for my eyes. I enjoy reading them out loud, but I have to squint a little. Otherwise, it’s a nice addition to my bookshelf!

Great gift for poetry lovers!
I picked this up for my sister who adores poetry, especially classics. She was thrilled when I gave it to her! The illustrations and layout are quite charming, making it a perfect coffee table book.

Not what I expected
I thought the book would contain more in-depth commentary on the poems themselves. It's a nice collection, but I was hoping for additional context. Just poems and not much else. Still, the selection is nice!

Disappointed with the shipping
The book finally arrived, but the corner of the cover was damaged during shipping. The poems are lovely, but I wish the packaging had been better. I’m not sure if I would order again due to this issue.

A beautiful edition of Pushkin's work
I bought this Pushkin Press edition of 'Poems to Night' and I absolutely love the cover design. The binding feels sturdy and the paper quality is fantastic. It’s perfect for readers who appreciate classic poetry, and I’ve already gifted a couple to friends!
