EXAMINES THE NATURE AND ROLE of political ideology in major educational reform efforts of the Frei, Allende, and Pinochet governments. It is argued that, although ideological considerations are significant in the planning and promulgation of educational reforms, they are sometimes sacrificed to accommodate pragmatic concerns for political consolidation and stability. In this process, special interest groups, such as the Church, the bureaucracy, and the teaching profession, have played an influential role in the Chilean experience.
