Thomas Krumm untersucht in seiner empirischen Studie das rotgrne 'Coalitionbuilding' in Hessen in den 1980er Jahren und rekonstruiert in drei sequenzanalytischen Fallstudien den sukzessiven Ausbau rotgrner Identittsangebote. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die symbolische Politik der Vergemeinschaftung von SPD und Grnen primr durch die Grnen betrieben wurde. Die SPD musste im 'rotgrnen Projekt' darauf achten, nicht ins Hintertreffen zu geraten. Als zentrale Instrumente der symbolischen Politik von RotGrn in Hessen in den 1980er Jahren erweisen sich die Konzepte 'Atomausstieg', 'Hessenkoalition' und 'Joschka' Fischer. Im Verlauf der Untersuchung wird zugleich eine systemtheoretische Revision symbolischer Politik vorgenommen.
