A partir del retorno de Chile a la democracia (1990), las demandas asociadas a una mayor equidad de gnero se han transformado en una parte importante de la poltica nacional. Este libro argumenta que la democratizacin polticoinstitucional ha sido condicin necesaria pero no suficiente para abordar la cuestin de la igualdad de gnero en la sociedad. Si bien los movimientos sociales han conseguido colocar sus demandas en el espacio poltico, traducirlas a legislacin y polticas pblicas concretas ha sido un proceso largo y complejo; un proceso en el cual se ponen en juego recursos materiales y sobre todo simblicos, tales como las representaciones predominantes sobre el rol que hombres y mujeres deben desempear en la sociedad y en la familia, as como la concepcin misma de lo que deba ser una familia o cmo se concibe la sexualidad, entre otras cuestiones. La presente obra documenta ese proceso y propone un marco analtico para el estudio de la ciudadana desde la perspectiva de gnero.
