Ds 1897, il commence crire. Il entre University College en 1898, et c'est en 1900 qu'il fait un vritable dbut littraire, avec un article sur Ibsen. En 1920, James Joyce s'installe Paris sur les conseils d'Ezra Pound. Il fait la connaissance d'Adrienne Monnier, de Sylvia Beach, qui publie Ulysse en 1922, de Valery Larbaud, qui le prsente au ToutParis littraire. En 1940, il se rfugie Zurich, o il meurt le 13 janvier 1941.
