Diese Studie untersucht das Portrait und Menschenbild in der koreanischen Photographie. Um die zugrundeliegenden sthetischen Leitvorstellungen und sozialen Funktionen herauszuarbeiten, findet ein Vergleich mit entsprechenden Entwicklungen und Bedingungsfaktoren in Europa und in Deutschland statt. Politik und Kultur waren in beiden Lndern aufs engste verwoben. Erst in einer Zeit von Kriegen und revolutionren gesellschaftlichen Umbrchen, d. h. in Deutschland nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg (Weimarer Republik) und in Korea nach der Befreiung von japanischer Besatzungsherrschaft und nach dem Koreakrieg, konnte sich die Photographie als knstlerisches Ausdrucksmittel etablieren und auch eine Vielfalt an Vernderungen und neuen Bedeutungen in der Bildenden Kunst hervorbringen. Fr beide Lnder bildeten diese Umbruchszeiten eine der schpferischsten und experimentierfreudigsten Epochen ihrer photographischen Geschichte. Zu den wichtigsten Charakteristika der Photographie gehren, dass sie von allen Schichten der Gesellschaft gleichermaen akzeptiert wird und dass sie die Beziehung zwischen Individuum und Gesellschaft reflektieren kann. Dies gilt in besonderer Weise fr die Portraitphotographie, die in dieser Untersuchung im Mittelpunkt steht.
