The title of our book reveals much about our goals. The word portrait emphasizes the individuality of a particular woman and the historian's representation of her. By combining American and Women, we include the general features of the cultural life that individuals shared with others who were American and who were women. We have places introductory essays before each grouping of portraits to provide connections between our subjects and their times.
