Salu par Baudelaire pour son extravagance et plbiscit en tant que Conntable des lettres , il a contribu au rayonnement de la littraire franaise de la seconde moiti du XIXe sicle. A la fois romancier, nouvelliste, essayiste, pote, critique littraire, journaliste, dandy, et polmiste, Aurevilly est l'archtype de l'artiste complet du long XIXme.En fin polmiste de cette priode de grands bouleversements socitaux, ses crits se construisent autour de critiques acerbes montrant aussi bien les effets pervers de la modernit, du positivisme que les hypocrisies du parti catholique. Il fut l'auteur des romans et nouvelles o l'on retrouve des lments du romantisme, du fantastique que du ralisme historique. Son 1/2uvre la plus clbre aujourd'hui est son recueil de nouvelles Les Diaboliques, paru tardivement en (1874), dans lesquelles l'insolite et la transgression, plongeant le lecteur dans un univers ambigu, ont valu leur auteur d'tre accus d'immoralisme.
