Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht hinduistische Vorstellungen von Toten, Geistern und Ahnen im Zeitraum vom Sterben eines Menschen bis zu einem Jahr nach dem Tod. Grundlage dafr sind folgende auch heute noch fr die Ausfhrung hinduistischer Totenrituale und die Vorstellungen vom jenseitigen Fortleben der Verstorbenen wichtige Werke: der Pretakalpa des Garudapurana, der Garudapuranasaroddhara und die Pretamanjari. In der Arbeit werden die zum Teil sehr gegenstzlich erscheinenden rituellen und mythologischen Konzeptionen nachtodlicher Existenzen untersucht, eingeordnet und voneinander abgegrenzt. Das Buch schliet mit der kommentierten Erstbersetzung der Pretamajari inklusive Transliteration.
