Written by a working journalist who covered the conflict in the Missouri Synod and the walkout from Concordia Seminary in 1974, this is as much about that conflict as it is about J.A.O. Preus, the President of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod at the time. It is a study of ecclesiastical power politics and an inthefield report of the battle for the Bible as well as a revealing portrayal of a man who was willing to risk his church in the cause of orthodoxy.

I was excited to learn more about Missouri's role, but I found the writing style to be quite dry. Additionally, some sections felt repetitive. I wanted to love it, but it didn’t resonate with me like I hoped it would.

Well-researched but tough to follow
This book is packed with information, which is great, but sometimes it’s hard to follow the flow. I appreciate the effort put into the research, but I was hoping for a more cohesive narrative. Not the easiest read.

A must-read for history buffs!
This book really dives deep into the role of Missouri during the Civil War. I loved the detailed accounts and the way it presented the Lutheran perspective, which is often overlooked. Definitely a valuable addition to my collection!

Interesting but a bit dense
I found the subject matter fascinating, but there were parts that felt a bit heavy to get through. The author's passion is clear, yet the writing could have been more engaging. Still, worth checking out if you're into Civil War history.
