Las enfermedades cardiovasculares aportan el mayor nmero de defunciones en todo el planeta, por lo que se les considera un azote de la humanidad. Se realiz un estudio descriptivo y prospectivo con el objetivo de determinar los factores de riesgo cardiovascular, que inciden en el ictus aterotrombtico y el sndrome coronario agudo en Trinidad, durante el perodo de tiempo comprendido entre el 1ro de junio de 2011 y el 31 de enero de 2012. La poblacin estuvo formada por 71 pacientes con el diagnstico clnicotomogrfico de ictus aterotrombtico o clnicolectrocardiogrfico de sndrome coronario agudo, ingresados en el Hospital General de Trinidad "Toms Carrera Galiano". La muestra se conform con 60 pacientes. Se encontr el tabaquismo como el factor de riesgo ms frecuente. Los hombres entre 60 a 69 aos fueron los ms afectados. El tabaquismo predomin en los sujetos con sndrome coronario agudo y la presencia de placas de ateromas lo fue para el ictus aterotrombtico.
