El prncipe (en el original en italiano, Il principe) es un tratado de teora poltica escrito por Nicols Maquiavelo en 1513, mientras este se encontraba encarcelado en San Casciano por la acusacin de haber conspirado en contra de los Mdici. El libro fue publicado en 1531 y dedicado a Lorenzo II de Mdici, duque de Urbino, en respuesta a dicha acusacin, a modo de regalo. Tiene ciertas inspiraciones en Csar Borgia. Se trata de la obra de mayor renombre de este autor, aquella por la cual se acuaron el sustantivo maquiavelismo y el adjetivo maquiavlico. Su objetivo es mostrar cmo los prncipes deben gobernar sus Estados, segn las distintas circunstancias, para poder conservarlos exitosamente en su poder, lo cual es constantemente demostrado mediante mltiples referencias a gobernantes histricos y a sus acciones. Presenta como caracterstica sobresaliente el mtodo de dejar de lado sistemticamente, con respecto a las estrategias polticas, las cuestiones relativas a la moral y a la religin. Slo interesa conservar el poder. (De hecho, para Maquiavelo as obran incluso papas como Alejandro VI, lo que constituye la clave de su xito.) La conservacin del Estado obliga a obrar cuando es necesario contra la fe, contra la caridad, contra la humanidad y contra la religin. Y ello requiere a nivel terico en oposicin a toda la tradicin de la filosofa poltica desde Platn en adelante dejar de idealizar gobiernos y ciudades utpicas e inexistentes para inclinarse en cambio por los hombres reales y los pueblos reales, examinar sus comportamientos efectivos y aceptar que el ejercicio real de la poltica contradice con frecuencia la moral y no puede guiarse por ella.
