This textbook for upper division undergraduates and graduate students provides the ideal introduction to seismology. A studentfriendly text fully details the fundamental concepts and includes a stepbystep development of the relevant mathematics. Beginning with clear examples of introductory topics such as onedimensional problems and liquid media, the book goes on to cover most of the fundamental concepts in seismology. The author describes the application of seismology to the knowledge of the structure of the earths interior and the origin and nature of earthquakes. Coverage includes seismic wave propagation, normal mode theory, ray theory approximation, body and surface waves, source mechanisms and kinematic and dynamic models. The book also contains appendices on useful mathematical tools and includes extensive problems that help students to understand the basic concepts in this area.

The Principles of Seismology is an excellent read for anyone interested in understanding earthquakes and seismic activity. The explanations are clear and detailed, making complex concepts more accessible. I recently bought it for my geology class, and my students are really engaged with the material!

Not What I Expected
I was a little disappointed with this book. The content is pretty dense, and I had a hard time getting through some chapters. Maybe it’s better for advanced students. I was looking for something more beginner-friendly. Not the best choice for me.

Solid Book, But Some Sections Are Dated
This book covers the basics of seismology well, but I found a few sections felt outdated. It’s still a good resource for students, but I wish they included more recent case studies. Overall, it’s a solid reference for anyone studying geology or earth sciences.
