Dies Buch ist aus Vorlesungen hervorgegangen, die ich blsher zweimal unter dem Titel 'Mathematik fur Philosophen' gehalten habe. AuBerdem sind Erfahrungen eingeflossen, die ich bei einem Volkshochschulkurs ftir Nichtmathematiker, bei Fortbildungsveranstaltungen fur Gymnasial lehrer und bei der Abfassung von Uberblicksartikeln, z.B. fur die Zeitschrift 'Die Naturwissen schaften', sammeln konnte. Mit den vorgesehenen beiden Banden verfolge ich vor allem das Ziel, Nichtmathematikern mit einer ungefahr dem Abltur entsprechenden MindestAllgemeinbildung, msbesondere also auch Studienanfangern, ein moghchst deutl!ches Bild von der MathematIk in ihrem gegenwartigen Zustand zu vermitteln. Ganz lelse hege ich die Hoffnung, dieser Text moge auch Mathematikern in mittleren und hoheren Semestern sowie Gymnasiallehrern vom Fach dazu dienen konnen, ihre ohnehin entstehenden oder schon entstandenen Vorstellungen von der Mathematik zu uberpriifen, zu gestalten, zu erganzen. Vielleicht wird auch ein Dozent den einen oder anderen Literaturhinweis oder gewisse Arten der Darstellung als Anregung verwerten konnen. Angesichts so1cher ZIe1setzungen muBte ich mich bei der Abfassung der beiden Bande nattirlich dauernd mit den Grundsatzfragen Was soll ich erzahlen? Wie soll ich's erziihlen? auseinandersetzen. Diese Fragen stellt man sichja auch im Umgang mit den eigenen Fachgenossen.
