El bajo rendimiento de carne por ovino, la dependencia a insumos y el desconocimiento del grado de independencia son limitantes para la competitividad de las empresas pecuarias. Se estudiaron dos propiedades emergentes de los agroecosistemas: la productividad y la autonoma en dos granjas ovinas ubicadas en el estado de Veracruz, Mxico. La productividad se evalu en base a la eficiencia biolgica y econmica, considerando la produccin de carne por hectrea por ao (Pc/ha/ao), la conversin alimenticia global(CA), el costo de produccin por kg de carne y por vientre, la utilidad neta, la rentabilidad sobre costo total y sobre inversin, el punto de equilibrio en kg de carne y relacin beneficio/costo (B/C). La autonoma se analiz con base a la autonoma laboral (Al), autonoma alimentaria (Aa) y autonoma econmica (Ae). Se aplicaron tcnicas del mtodo de anlisis de agroecosistemas y de estudio de caso como parte de la metodologa para recabar los datos tcnicos y socioeconmicos.
