El tema que desarrolla este dramaturgo de la escuela calderoniana tiene extraordinaria vigencia dado el innovador papel que tienen sus protagonistas femeninos en el contexto de un cdigo de honor sumamente patriarcal. El texto, mejorando la ltima edicin del mismo, de la poca romntica, se basa en la edicin de 1640 del propio Rojas.
