Um dem eigentlichen Wortsinn von progressiv" gerecht zu werden, wird die Bezeichnung Progressive Rock bewusst sehr weit definiert, dabei werden, anders als blich, die verschiedenen sthetischen Konzepte einer progressiven Rockmusik zusammengefhrt von dem nur Minderheiten ansprechenden Avantgarde Rock bis zu den Produktionen, die deutliche kommerzielle Kompromisse eingegangen sind. Den Beschreibungen der jeweiligen Stilformen dem Art, Avantgarde und Jazzrock sowie aktuellerer Entwicklungen wie dem Progressive Metal folgen die Darstellungen ihrer wichtigsten Protagonisten sowie ein berblick ber neuere Produktionen dieses Genres. Vorangestellt sind diesem ersten Teil die terminologischen berlegungen, die eine Orientierungshilfe in der verwirrenden Vielfalt der Begrifflichkeiten anbietet beispielsweise in der Abgrenzung von Art zu Progressive Rock.Der zweite Teil der Arbeit beschftigt sich mit der Funktion des Progressive Rock als Ware auf dem Tontrgermarkt. Damit spannt diese Arbeit einen Bogen von der knstlerischen Entwicklung des Progressive Rock bis zu seiner Vermarktung als Ware durch die Musikindustrie. Schwerpunkt ist dabei immer die Problematik aus den Gegenstzen Kunst und Kommerz.
