World War II was two years old and America was still described as a 'neutral nation.' By the fall of 1941, Britain was being pushed to the brink of disaster in North Africa. Time was running out and so were the combat ready planes of Britain and its allies.Churchill asked Roosevelt for 'some help.' Roosevelt responded by authorizing a secret mission. Build an Air Depot, to be established and operated by American civilians under the direction of Douglas Aircraft Company. It would be classified 'Secret' and given the title of 'Project 19.' Its location was 1,100 miles from the front lines in remote Eritrea, Eastern Africa. The Depot repaired hundreds of combat damaged 'lendlease' P40 fighters for the RAF. It went on to repair dozens of USAAF bombers, assemble new fighters and develop many life saving items in the war against the Luftwaffe. What did it accomplish? What happened to it? This true 'Aviation adventure story' took 6 years of research, interviews and sleuthing to assemble into an unforgettable story.
