This book is an attempt to critically study the adequacy of the protection available to the women refugees in the contemporary international legal regime. International refugee protection is meant to substitute for the protection of the state. It is not enough for a person to have good reason to fear persecution on one of the five grounds in her own country to have a claim to international protection as a refugee. In most of the times women have to face double persecution one as a member of the targeted group (along with men and children) and second as being women, persecution as women and persecution because of women. Instead of providing any breathing space, she is burdened with an extra yoke to establish the linkage between gender, the wellfounded fear of persecution and one or more of the definitional grounds. Furthermore book investigates the level of protection available to refugee women in USA, UK, Canada and India. Author concludes by saying that though India is not a signatory to the Convention on the Status of Refugee 1951, but its contribution to the refugee protection is phenomenal.
