Los 'Proverbios morales' constituyen un largo poema de contenido moral y sapiencial, escrito por un autor que se denomina 'Santo(b), judo de Carrin' y que dedica sus versos al rey don Pedro, hijo de Alfonso XI. Es evidente que el poema fue escrito por un judo para ofrecerlo a un rey cristiano y que circul por igual entre judos y cristianos. De los testimonios conservados se deriva su carcter heterogneo tanto en lo que se refiere a sus posibles destinatarios, como al uso del poema y a los modos transmisin. Las reflexiones morales del poema son de muy diversa ndole: la virtud de la liberalidad, la pobreza del sabio o la magnanimidad del rey, esta ltima, con un carcter tal vez subliminal, sirve para recordar una deuda que con el autor tena el fallecido Alfonso XI, padre del rey don Pedro. La obra, pese a estar dedicada a un rey, no es un espejo de prncipes ni de caballeros, ni su destinatario son las clases rectoras de la sociedad. Aparece escrita desde la posicin de quien se sabe frgil, aunque intelectualmente valioso, y elabora una reflexin problemtica y exigente para una 'aristocracia espiritual', una tica sin retribuciones absolutas ni sombra de falsas ilusiones. En su dominio del lenguaje y el entendimiento radica para l la sustancia del 'hombre que es hombre': no un asceta aislado sino un hombre inmerso en el cosmos y en la sociedad de los seres humanos.
