A variety of eccentric characters named Glidersleeve had been heard on Fibber McGee and Molly (beginning with Wallingford Tuttle Gildersleeve in 1936) before Hal Peary introduced his Thockmorton P. Gildersleeve characterization on the September 26, 1939 broadcast. Thockmorton was the bane of McGees existence until the character moved from Wistful Vista to the town of Summerfield on August 31, 1941 to assume the guardianship of his orphaned niece and nephew in his own spinoff sitcom. Peary also portrayed Gildy in a series of films, and starred in the radio series until 1950 when he quit to star in his shortlived Honest Harold series on CBS. The Great Gildersleeve continued for another seven seasons with Willard Waterman in the title role. The series featured an outstanding supporting cast including Lillian Randolph as housekeeper Birdie Lee Coggins, Earle Ross as Judge Horace Hooker, Richard LeGrand as Peavey the druggist, and Arthur Q. Bryan as barber Floyd Munson. Walter Tetley was heard as Gildys nephew Leroy Forrester throughout the radio run, while niece Marjorie was played in turn by Lurene Tuttle, Louise Erickson and Mary Lee Robb.The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet Ozzie Takes Bus Driving Test starring the Nelson Family: Bandleader Ozzie Nelson and his vocalistwife Harriet Hilliard achieved their greatest fame as Americas favorite young couple when The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet debuted on October 8, 1944 on their ninth wedding anniversary. The couple had previously demonstrated their comedic talents on The Red Skelton Show, and developed their own longrunning comedy series after Skelton was drafted. The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet aired through June 18, 1954 on radio and from 1952 through 1966 on television, and established the format for later familyorientated sitcoms including Father Knows Best, and Leave it to Beaver.
