Queer Studies and Queer Theory developed from Gay and Lesbian Studies. It comprises the analysis and subversion of social debate based on heterosexuality. In November 2006, the first international Congress on Queer Studies took place at the University of Vienna, Austria, the focus being on Queer Readings. Via this theme the event concentrated on the reading of literary texts with emphasis on two aspects: the connection of theory and its concrete application as well as the interaction between art and science. This volume of congress proceedings documents the wide range of positions and approaches presented.
