La estructura de un nanotubo de carbono, en su forma ms perfecta, consta de una lmina de grafito que plegada sobre s misma genera una estructura acicular hueca. Como su nombre indica, el dimetro de un nanotubo de carbono est comprendido en la escala nanomtrica. Concretamente, su dimetro oscila entre 0.7 y 80 nanmetros. Los nanotubos de carbono poseen propiedades excepcionales: pueden llegar a tener una densidad de corriente mil veces superior a la de metales como el cobre y propiedades mecnicas comparables a las del diamante. Estas excelentes propiedades abren un gran abanico de interesantes aplicaciones potenciales. El presente estudio abarca desde la propia sntesis de los nanotubos de carbono, el estudio de su citotoxicidad, la incorporacin de grupos funcionales (funcionalizacin) hasta el crecimiento de dendrmeros sobre su superficie. Finalmente, a modo de ejemplo concreto, se estudian los conjugados nanotubo/dendrmero, estructuras multivalentes idneas para aplicaciones biomdicas.
