Mai 1771 als ltestes Kind eines jdischen Kaufmanns, Bankiers und Juweliers in Berlin geboren. Ihr folgen vier weitere Kinder. Die Familie Levin ist sehr wohlhabend und gehrt zu den 500 Schutzjuden der jdischen Oberschicht, die es zur Zeit Friedrich II. in Berlin gibt. Sie besitzen deshalb fr Juden ungewhnlich viele Rechte. Als 1790 jedoch Rahels Vater stirbt, gert die Familie in wirtschaftliche Schwierigkeiten. Das Geschft geht an Rahels Bruder Markus. Rahel kmmert sich um ihre kleineren Geschwister und bernimmt deren Erziehung, da sich ihre Mutter dazu nicht in der Lage fhlt. Rahel ist von ihrer Familie finanziell anhngig. 1790 erffnet sie ihren ersten Salon im elterlichen Haus in der Dachstube. Er ist die Weiterfhrung der Abendgesellschaft des verstorbenen Vaters. In ihrem Salon treffen Menschen jeden Standes zusammen, um sich ber Literatur, Natur und Kunst zu unterhalten. Unter den Gsten befinden sich auch bekannte Romantiker wie Brentano, Schleiermacher, die Gebrder Humboldt und Tieck. Da Rahel schon in ihrer Jugend hufig krank ist, reist sie im Sommer 1795 zur Kur nach Teplitz. Im Winter lernt sie den Grafen von Finckenstein kennen. Die Beziehung scheitert jedoch trotz Verlobung nach fnf Jahren, da Rahel von seiner Familie nicht akzeptiert wird und Finckenstein nicht bereit ist, ein Doppelleben zu fhren. Um sich abzulenken, fhrt Rahel 1800 nach Paris und bleibt dort bis zum April 1801. 1802 lernt Rahel den spanischen Gesandtschaftssekretr Don Raphael dUrquijo kennen und erlebt eine zweite unglckliche Liebesbeziehung.
