Am 22. Januar 1914 schreibt die Pianistin Rilke zum ersten Mal, nachdem sie seine Geschichten vom lieben Gott' gelesen hat. Was mit einem einzelnen Brief begann steigerte sich zu einer wahren Sturzflut an Briefen, innerhalb von vier Wochen schrieben sich der Dichter und die Musikerin 39 Briefe. Wichtige Themen sind in erster Linie die Musik, die Liebe, die vielen Reisen Rilkes, aber er schildert auch Erfahrungen aus seiner Kindheit, erste Liebeserlebnisse, seine Ehe und das Verhltnis zu seiner Tochter Ruth. Ebenso finden sich in seinen Briefen Ausfhrungen ber Marcel Proust, ber Balzac und das Hssliche' in der Kunst sowie ber die Psychoanalyse. Es gibt also kaum einen Lebensbereich, der in diesem intensiven Briefwechsel ausgeschlossen wird. So schreibt Rilke am 18. Februar 1914 an Benvenuta: Sag mir, einmal, wenn dies alles geschrieben ist, leb ich dann, sterb ich dann? Ists doch das Vermchtnis meines ganzen bisherigen Daseins. Und wer bin ich denn, dass ichs da so wogenden Wesens hinschreiben darf, Dir, und es siegeln mit Deinem Herzen?'. Alle Briefe, die in Jahren mglich wren, mchte ich Ihnen auf einmal schreiben [...]', und so ffnet er ihr sein Herz, sie wird zu Benvenuta', der Willkommenen in seinem Leben.
