LongTerm Capital Management (LTCM) wurde 1993 von John Meriwether, dem ehemaligem Head of Fixed Income Trading bei Salomon Brothers und 15 weiteren Partnern in Form einer Delaware Partnership in Greenwich, Connecticut gegrndet. Im Vergleich mit den meisten anderen Hedgefonds ist insbesondere die Zusammensetzung der Partner bei LTCM hervorzuheben. So gelang es Meriwether, neben vielen seiner ehemaligen Trader von Salomon Brothers auch David Mullins, den frheren Vizevorsitzenden der US Federal Reserve fr den Fonds zu gewinnen. Mullins' Kontakte ermglichten LTCM einen deutlich verbesserten Zugang zu internationalen Banken als potentielle Investoren. Weitere Partner waren Myron Scholes und Robert C. Merton, die 1997 den Nobelpreis fr ihre Arbeiten im Bereich der Bewertung von Optionen erhielten. Diese auerordentlich beeindruckende Kombination von Humankapital ermglichte es LTCM, im Gegensatz zu anderen Hedgefonds, deutlich unvorteilhaftere Konditionen von ihren Investoren zu verlangen. So belief sich die jhrliche Managementgebhr auf 2% zuzglich 25% des jeweiligen Jahresgewinns. Branchenblich waren 1% jhrliche Managementgebhr und 20% des Gewinns. Weiterhin wurde von den Investoren eine Mindestinvestition von $10 Mio. und eine Mindestanlagedauer von drei Jahren verlangt. Trotz dieser deutlich verschrften Vertragsbedingungen schaten es LTCM's hochdekorierte Partner, dass der Fonds bereits in seinem Grndungsjahr $1,3 Mrd. von Investoren einsammeln konnte.
