Dieser Frage geht Zimmermann mit Blick auf den raumlichen Aspekt der sozialen Organisation sowie dem langwierigen Prozess der Verheiratung nach. Denn Heirat ist auch in postsozialistischer Zeit in der Mongolei ein bedeutender rite de passage geblieben, und eines der zentralsten Mittel, um weit reichende Beziehungen zu schaffen und aufrecht zu erhalten. Neben einer quellenkritischen Einleitung und einem Anhang, der zwei OriginalUbersetzungen wissenschaftlicher Beitrage aus dem Mongolischen enthalt, ist die Untersuchung in zwei Teile gegliedert. Teil I befasst sich mit den elementaren Klassifikationen der Viehzuchtergesellschaft. Diese geschieht uber die Konzeptionen von Raum, Arbeit und Ereignissen (Festen), insbesondere den Vorstellungen eines ordered space in Jurte und Lager. Teil II hat eine detaillierte Darstellung der sozialen, raumlichen, zeitlichen und symbolischen Struktur des Heiratsprozesses und des damit verbundenen Austauschsystems zum Inhalt. Exkurse, etwa zu 'Gender und die Ideologie der Patrilinien', bieten weiterfuhrende Erganzungen. Zimmermanns Studie liefert mit der Analyse der Struktur der westmongolischen Heirat einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Ethnographie der Mongolei.
